Closing the Gap is a long-term national commitment. The ‘gap’ stands for a recognised disadvantage that exists between Indigenous Australians and other Australians’ standard of living.
‘Closing the Gap is a great national challenge, but also a great national opportunity to achieve lasting change and ensure that future generations of Indigenous Australians have all the opportunities enjoyed by other Australians to live full, healthy lives and achieve their potential.
All sections of the Australian community have a role to play in rising to this challenge – governments, Indigenous Australians, the corporate and community sectors, and the wider community. A long road lies ahead, but the new partnerships emerging between governments, business and the wider community have the potential to achieve results where previous efforts have failed.’ - Closing the Gap on Indigenous Disadvantage: The Challenge for Australia (external website, new window) Prime Minister the Hon. Kevin Rudd MP, 26 February 2009.
The challenge has been put forward for the nation to think outside the square, to find solutions that cut across government policy, portfolio and jurisdictional boundaries.
Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) embraces this challenge and plays its part in bridging the ‘gap’ through economically focused programs and initiatives that assist Indigenous Australians to participate in the mainstream economy.
IBA shares its specialist commercial expertise to promote the development of policies, activities and initiatives that will have a significant beneficial impact on Indigenous interests.
