Reconciliation Action Plan

Our Vision for Reconciliation

Indigenous Business Australia’s (IBA’s) vision is for a nation in which the First Australians are economically independent and an integral part of the economy. For Australia to prosper, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples must share in the country’s wealth, participate equally in education and employment, and enjoy health, wellbeing and longevity. We strive for sustainable Indigenous communities, with vibrant social and economic livelihoods – that is true reconciliation.

Our Business

IBA actively demonstrates its commitment to reconciliation through its business, people and products. We promote reconciliation by increasing the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in home ownership, small business and joint venture investments and creating jobs or self-employment opportunities. We do this by working directly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and engaging the support of the private and public sectors.

We also promote reconciliation by:

  • understanding the cultural and social context in which we work and delivering services with empathy
  • building and displaying respect and trust in all our business dealings
  • forming long-term partnerships with clients, the private sector and state and territory governments
  • being responsive and tailoring our activities to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as individuals and locally distinct communities
  • identifying and extending ‘what works’ based on direct client feedback, research and program evaluation
  • providing individualised support arrangements to increase capacity and experience
  • assisting other organisations, groups and agencies in the delivery of their outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and
  • attracting and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and promoting culturally supportive workplaces for employees.

A core reconciliation commitment is our annual IBA NAIDOC Week Breakfast, which brings together government ministers, IBA Board members, and representatives from the private sector, Indigenous groups, and other government departments and agencies to celebrate IBA’s achievements in Indigenous economic development and its contribution to the Government’s Closing the Gap (external website, new window) initiative.

We measure our contribution to reconciliation against specific commitments and performance indicators, in accordance with Reconciliation Australia (external website, new window).
