Context

Indigenous Business Australia is a unique organisation that promotes and encourages self-management, self-sufficiency and economic independence for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Established under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2005, IBA’s programs provide the means for Indigenous Australians to create wealth and accumulate assets, take up investment opportunities, create business enterprises that provide additional employment opportunities, and to purchase homes.

It achieves these outcomes by applying a commercial focus, and by building mutually respectful and productive partnerships with Indigenous Australians, government, non-government and private sector organisations.

The Business Development and Customer Engagement team supports aspiring entrepreneurs, start-ups and established businesses to develop their capabilities and take full advantage of their opportunities, with a clear focus across the end to end engagement process The team also assists Indigenous entrepreneurs and businesses to develop financial proposals, risk management plans, finance applications, and develops and delivers post-loan mentoring programs designed to enhance the success and sustainability of its customers.

Role

The Business Development and Loan Portfolio Manager reports to the WA Regional Manager, Business Solutions. The position has responsibility for building a pipeline of potential customers and to then assist them to access IBA finance products and solutions. The role will also be required to provide ongoing relationship management to the client to support their ongoing success and business sustainability. The role requires a significant degree of independence and operates in an environment of limited supervision and direction once the key performance criteria has been set.

Duties

  • Develop and maintain respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
  • Build and manage networks of stakeholders, working partnerships and external resources to identify and build a pipeline of potential customers who are aspiring, start-up or existing business operators.
  • Provide guidance and linkages to resources that support customers’ development of capabilities, industry knowledge and understanding of the principles of business, necessary to establish and operate a viable business.
  • Work closely with customers to assess their business readiness and establish a development pathway into business. Provide support and guidance to customers to develop their business and finance proposals.
  • Develop commercial credit submissions for start-up and existing business customers.
  • Develop customer engagement and relationship building strategies to fully understand business performance, identify areas for business improvement and possible growth opportunities and to support the development of customer business acumen.
    • Manage a portfolio of business lending customers who are operating small to medium sized businesses within IBA policy & procedures. This includes:\Identify business risk early and assist IBA in the development and implementation of strategies and solutions to manage risk,
    • Collect and analyse financial statements, reports and other information (as required),
    • Manage loan arrears, non-performing loans, turnaround and voluntarily exit processes.
    • Co-ordinate the loan documentation and drawdown processes ensuring customers are supported throughout.
  • Co-ordinate and prepare briefings, reports and submissions required by senior management and prepare correspondence of a complex nature.
  • Accurately capture, manage and report information.
  • Exercise delegations in accordance with IBA policy & procedure.

  • Displays Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural capability:
    • awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and culture as well as the demonstrated ability to liaise, communicate and negotiate sensitively and effectively with Indigenous individuals and communities
    • awareness and understanding of Australian Indigenous issues particularly as they relate to business operations and development.

Skills and Experience

  • In the small to medium size business sector, a high standard of portfolio management and customer focus, displaying a commitment to quality customer service and to the customer being at the centre of everything.
  • High level of business acumen and knowledge & understanding of business concepts/operations/management relating to both small and medium size businesses, business development, financial analysis and commercial lending and the ability to discuss business needs, risks and formulation of strategies and implementation of solutions with customers and delegates.
  • Significant ability to negotiate confidently and communicate with influence, clarity and ability to understand and adapt to an audience.
  • Extensive knowledge of legal concepts together with a strong working understanding of commercial transactions, securities and litigation processes.
  • Significantly results focused and effective as a team member and more broadly across an organisation and under limited supervision and direction.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite of products – primarily Word, Excel and Outlook.

Prerequisite requirements

    • Current driver’s licence.
    • Willingness and ability to undertake regional and remote travel as required, including overnight absences at least once each month.
